COVID-19 vaccination and compliance

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement:
On July 15, 2021, the University of California formally enacted its COVID-19 vaccination requirement for all students, staff and faculty. The announcement of this vaccine requirement can be read here, which also contains links to FAQs for students and employees, along with a link to the full policy.

New students for fall quarter can comply with this mandate via one of the two options below:

  1. Vaccination: Once you complete your initial vaccination series and booster, report your vaccination information in the Health-e-Messaging system as soon as you receive your final shot by September 21, 2022, whichever is earliest. If you will complete your initial vaccination series and booster after September 21, please enter the date of your shot(s) in Health-e-Messaging as soon as you receive them to indicate that you are in the process of becoming compliant with policy. For detailed instructions on how to report your information, visit the Vaccine Program page
  2. Medical, Pregnancy Deferral or Religious Exception: New students for fall quarter should submit their request for an exception as soon as possible and no later than September 21, 2022.

COVID-19 Booster Requirement

UPDATE: On Sept. 1, the CDC recommended updated COVID-19 boosters from Pfizer for people 12 and older and from Moderna for people 18 and older. The updated boosters are bivalent vaccines, meaning they target both the most recent Omicron subvariants as well as the original COVID-19 strain.

With this recommendation, the UC Vaccine policy now requires all staff and students to get the bivalent booster, when eligible (two months after either an initial series or monovalent booster). Campus leaders recognize that the availability of the bivalent vaccine is currently limited. Please note: Compliance with the bivalent booster requirement does not yet affect employment status, access to facilities or access to services at UC Davis.

Visit the COVID-19 Vaccine Program page for more details and to learn more about options to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19 Vaccine Requirement Compliance:
Students who have no vaccination information reported in Health-e-Messaging or have not submitted and exception request by the first day of classes (Sept. 21, 2022) will have a registration hold placed on their account. This hold will prohibit you from making any class schedule changes, editing your grade option or changing the units of a variable unit course. Students will receive email notices to alert them that they are not compliant in the Health-e-Messaging system and will continue to receive them until they have completed the compliance process. For students who are unable to access a WHO-authorized vaccine for their initial series prior to arriving to Davis please review the question and answer below for information on how to temporarily suspend the registration hold.

  • I am a new student for fall quarter and unable to access a WHO-Authorized vaccine prior to arriving at UC Davis or not able to complete my initial vaccination series by September 21, 2022. What should I do?
  • We understand that there are circumstances where students want to get vaccinated with their initial series but are not able to access WHO-authorized vaccines or be current on their vaccinates by September 21, 2022 due to inability to access an approved vaccine prior to your arrival in Davis. Students who have begun their vaccination series and are in the process of becoming current on their vaccines (including the booster dose) will not receive a registration hold as long as they continue to get their vaccinations in accordance with the timelines provided in the CDC guidance

For example, if you are eligible for your second Pfizer shot of your initial series on September 15 and you have not received your vaccine within 14 days of your eligibility date, a registration hold will be placed on your account on September 29.

Daily symptom survey

  • Effective June 24, students will no longer be required to complete the DSS prior to accessing campus facilities. The DSS will remain available to students, who can use it as a method for monitoring their symptoms and also as a way to show their isolation status if they need to verify that they cannot access campus facilities.
  • Student employees will still be required to complete the DSS before arriving to work at a university controlled facility. Doing so fulfills the employee obligation to self-check symptoms prior to arriving at work each day. In addition, those who fill out the DSS will receive email notifications of the daily potential exposure report when applicable.
  • The visitor version of the symptom survey will also remain available.

Events and gatherings

EVENTS - please refer to the Event Guidance page for the current guidance for campus events.

GATHERINGS - as per state and local guidance, indoor and outdoor off-campus gatherings are permitted. But COVID is still here, and there are simple things you can do to reduce the risk of transmission and protect your friends and classmates.

  • Outdoor is still preferable to indoor gatherings.
  • If you are indoors, we strongly encourage wearing face coverings. Have extra masks available for anyone who forgets theirs and would like to wear one.
  • If indoors, you can also increase ventilation by opening windows.
  • If anyone is showing symptoms, they should stay home.
  • Consider a guest list in case someone gets sick and you need to provide a list of attendees to a contact tracer. You may also simply ask folks to sign-in when they arrive.
  • Review more hosting tips on the Safe Party website.

Face coverings

Face coverings are strongly recommended and required in some locations. Everyone is encouraged to wear a face covering indoors. Face coverings are required at the ARC testing kiosk and healthcare settings. See face covering requirement details.

Health and mental health resources

Student Health and Counseling Services information:

  • Medical visits: Schedule a telephone visit through the Health-e-Messaging portal to initiate care. Speak with a Student Health Center nurse during normal business hours or the after-hours nurse advice service by calling 530-752-2349.
  • Mental health visits: Please visit the Aggie Mental Health website for more information about mental health appointments, crisis support and self-care that is available, based on where you are residing.

International students

For information and considerations for international students, please review the Coronavirus Information and Resources on the Services for International Students and Scholars website.

Isolation and quarantine

Isolation and quarantine help protect the public by preventing exposure to people who have or may have a contagious disease.

  • Isolation keeps someone who is sick or tested positive for COVID-19 without symptoms away from others, even in their own home.
  • Quarantine keeps someone who was in close contact with someone who has COVID-19 away from others.

Please review the Isolation Guidance for Students page for detailed information.

Public health policies, requirements and enforcement

Testing and reporting

  • Effective June 24, mandatory asymptomatic testing requirements ended. Asymptomatic testing for UC Davis students and will continue to be available on a voluntary basis, except for the start of fall quarter. See below for details.
  • Asymptomatic PRC saliva testing is still available on campus at the Human Resources Administration Building. See the COVID-19 Testing page for more details.
  • Anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 must report it to the university within Health-e-Messaging, unless they received their positive result through university testing.

NEW - COVID-19 TESTING REQUIREMENT FOR STUDENTS
With many of our students traveling back to Davis for the start of fall quarter and COVID-19 cases and variants still present, campus is requiring every student to get tested for COVID-19 at least once between Sept. 9 and Oct. 7. This precautionary measure will help to identify asymptomatic cases and mitigate the spread among our community. If a student arrives to Davis after Oct. 7, then they should get tested within 1 week of their arrival.

The preferred testing option is through our high quality saliva based PCR testing. However, both PRC and antigen testing options are available to students:

  • On-campus saliva testing via an appointment in Health-e-Messaging
  • Free antigen tests will be available for pick up at the Memorial Union Quad on the following dates and times:
    • Sept. 12 - Sept. 20: 9:30AM–1:30PM
    • Sept. 21 - Sept. 30: 9:30AM–4:30PM
  • Students may use a home antigen test

Only positive test results are required to be reported to campus via Health-e-Messaging. Students should follow the isolation guidance provided on the Campus Ready website for them and their roommates, if applicable.
